Mandy leads Blue Knights past the Nantucket Whalers
Oct 19, 2015, 2:18 am

NANTUCKET - Becca Mandy had a goal and three assists to lead the Sandwich Blue Knights past the Nantucket Whalers 4-2 on Saturday.

Mandy, a senior at Sandwich, sent in a corner to Molly MacFarland in the opening minute of the second half to knot the game at 1-all.

Nantucket (7-3) retook the lead roughly eight minutes later on Kate Daniels’ second goal of the game, this one a penalty kick that Sandwich sophomore goalie Halle Tickell got her fingertips on but was unable to stop. Daniels scored midway through the first half for the Whalers’ first goal.

Sara MacFarland knotted the game back up, 2-all, 10 minutes after Daniels’ second goal, off a deep cross from Mandy.

Mandy then put the Blue Knights on top for good with eight minutes to play on a hard shot to the Nantucket goalie’s short side.

Mandy finished her day with two minutes to play, finding Molly MacFarland for another goal and the 4-2 final.

Tickell needed to make a few tough saves in the win for Sandwich while senior Hailey Whalen and junior Olivia Horman were key defensively. Senior Staci Hopkins added strong play up front for the Blue Knights.

Sandwich travels to South Dartmouth to take on Dartmouth, the only team to defeat the Blue Knights this season.

EAST SANDWICH - The Sandwich Blue Knights blanked Martha's Vineyard 3-0 and at the same time qualified for the upcoming state tournament with the win on Thursday.

It was the earliest Sandwich (8-1-1, 4-0 ACL) has qualified for the tournament and it was also the eighth straight year the Blue Knights have advanced to post-season play.

Martha’s Vineyard (2-8-1) gave the host team a scrappy battle limiting the Blue Knights to just one first-half goal, a Becca Mandy score from 24-yards out that deflected off a Vineyard defender into the net.

The home club gave itself some breathing room with a tally six minutes into the second half when Sara MacFarland beat two MV defenders and then the Vineyard goalie to record the score. Haley Whelan added the final tally with an assist from Leah Mahoney, who was making her first varsity appearance.

Sophomore goalie Halle Tickell chalked up her seventh shutout of the season.

That was the lone offensive thrust of the game for Sandwich (7-1-1, 4-0 ACL). Defensively, the backline of Hailey Whelan, Kate Evans Liz wegman, olivia Horman and Amanda Karch did a solid job of keeping the speedy front wall of Nauset away for the Blue Knights’ goal. Sandwich 0, Barnstable 0: In a battle between teams that are at opposite ends of the standings, the Blue Knights and Red Raiders battled to a scoreless tie in Hyannis.

Sandwich (5-0-1) dominated field position, but Barnstable (1-6-1) packed in its defense and relied on the stellar play of goalie Mia Crawley to keep the visitors off the board and earn the Raiders a point.

Sandwich had a golden chance to score on a centering pass to Sarah McFarland, but her header sailed just over the bar. Besides McFarland, also playing well for Sandwich were her sister Molly, who was making her first varsity start, Haley Whelan and Becca Mandy.
