A Dream born out of tragedy

SANDWICH — Wearing her late son’s jacket from the U.S. Naval Academy, Patricia DeConto cut the ribbon to dedicate a stadium she helped to build in his honor.

The Capt. Gerald F. DeConto Veterans Memorial Stadium was dedicated before a crowd that included his family, friends and classmates from the academy.

The dedication came more than 14 years after DeConto was killed. He was working at the Pentagon the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, planning the Navy’s response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City when a hijacked airliner was purposely crashed into the Department of Defense building. He was killed, but Navy officials have credited him with saving dozens of lives by sending people away from the command center and back to their offices before the attack.

“You need to have a vision and this was our vision,” Patricia DeConto said, recalling how the family overcame the devastating loss of a brother and son. “I think it came out pretty good, don’t you?”

The ceremony was held in the hour before the Sandwich High School football team took on the Marshfield Rams, a crisp autumn New England night perfect for the sport.

Sean Stackley, assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy and a classmate of Jerry DeConto, presented Patricia DeConto with a flag flown over the Pentagon in her son's honor and a carved piece of limestone from the building. A half-dozen of his classmates unfurled the flag and held it up as a backdrop, as Stackley read a dedication from the Secretary of the Navy.

“In dedicating this stadium to Jerry, his memory will not perish,” Stackley said.

The DeConto family kick-started the stadium project in 2005 with a $250,000 donation. They have since kicked in about $200,000 more and have spearheaded the project, which includes a synthetic turf field, bleachers, a press box and a new track.

“This is a public/private partnership that brought the whole community together,” David DeConto, Jerry’s older brother said. “As a coach at Sandwich High School, I see a new sense of pride and excitement.”

 


Knights fall to Clippers

EAST FALMOUTH - A four-goal second half helped the Falmouth girls soccer team avenge an earlier loss to the Sandwich Blue Knights with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Falmouth had beaten Sandwich 3-0 in East Sandwich on Oct. 3.

Freshman Tori Roulston scored twice. Senior captain Rachel Gilbert and sophomore Olivia Ferraro also netted goals to lead the Clippers (9-5, 4-3 Atlantic Coast League) to a win that clinched a spot in the playoffs.

Raulston scored just 2:40 after the half on a ball from Gilbert, knotting the game at 1-1.

Gilbert then finished off an assist from sophomore Chloe McLean a little over 10 minute later to give the Clippers the lead for good.

Raulston made it 3-1, knocking home a touch pass from sophomore Lexa Zampanti off a cross from Gilbert. Ferraro finished the scoring with 6:60 to play on an individual effort tally.

Sandwich (9-3-1, 4-1 ACL) had allowed only eight goals entering the contest.

The Blue Knights opened the scoring when sophomore Molly MacFarland fired a cross to junior Julia Hanson. Hanson buried the shot for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, and that lead held up through halftime.

Senior Caroline Raposo was key in net for Falmouth and got strong help on defense from senior Kaitlin McManus, senior captain Sam Theroux and sweeper Savannah Jensen. McLean and Ferraro were also key for the Clippers in the midfield.

Sophomore Amanda Karch also played well for the Blue Knights, coming off the bench to provide good minutes at outside defensive back.


Junior Varsity Girls' Soccer Tops Nauset

The Sandwich High School junior varsity girls’ soccer squad played Nauset Tuesday, October 13, and defeated the Warriors by a score of 1-0.

 

The Lady Knights got onto the scoreboard in the seventh minute when Maddie Wojciechowski got a foot on a rebound off the crossbar and slammed it home for the only goal SHS would need.

Nauset answered with pressure up top, but the back line of Sarah Mattson, Jen Wegman, and Libby Sawyer pushed back the attack.

“Everyone played well for us,” coach John Simkins said. “Alex Buck played a great holding midfield and Natalie Corsini, one of our center backs, showed some great speed and tenacity. She was just a rock on the back line. Jacquelyn Beaulieu helped out at midfield and came back and helped cover on defense. She is such an all-around great athlete.”

Freshman keeper Sophie Moroney picked up the win, her first junior varsity shutout.

“Sophie fielded some tough shots,” coach Simkins said. “She really did well for us.”


Mandy leads Blue Knights past the Nantucket Whalers

NANTUCKET - Becca Mandy had a goal and three assists to lead the Sandwich Blue Knights past the Nantucket Whalers 4-2 on Saturday.

Mandy, a senior at Sandwich, sent in a corner to Molly MacFarland in the opening minute of the second half to knot the game at 1-all.

Nantucket (7-3) retook the lead roughly eight minutes later on Kate Daniels’ second goal of the game, this one a penalty kick that Sandwich sophomore goalie Halle Tickell got her fingertips on but was unable to stop. Daniels scored midway through the first half for the Whalers’ first goal.

Sara MacFarland knotted the game back up, 2-all, 10 minutes after Daniels’ second goal, off a deep cross from Mandy.

Mandy then put the Blue Knights on top for good with eight minutes to play on a hard shot to the Nantucket goalie’s short side.

Mandy finished her day with two minutes to play, finding Molly MacFarland for another goal and the 4-2 final.

Tickell needed to make a few tough saves in the win for Sandwich while senior Hailey Whalen and junior Olivia Horman were key defensively. Senior Staci Hopkins added strong play up front for the Blue Knights.

Sandwich travels to South Dartmouth to take on Dartmouth, the only team to defeat the Blue Knights this season.
