MIAA soccer playoffs: Knights survive PKs

EAST SANDWICH — Catie Wojnar converted on the fifth penalty kick to give fifth-seeded Sandwich a dramatic 2-1 victory over No. 12 Westwood Sunday in the Division 2 South first round.

Sandwich improves to 12-2-5 and will host Atlantic Coast League opponent Plymouth North in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The Blue Knights defeated the Eagles once during the season and tied them in the other match. Westwood finishes 10-6-3.

After 80 minutes of regulation and a pair of overtimes, Sandwich converted on four of its five penalty kicks while the Wolverines went 2-for-4.

"We wanted to get the jump on them," said Blue Knights coach Dave DeConto of choosing to shoot first on the penalty kicks after winning the coin flip. "We had been practicing them, but in game competition you never know."

Caroline McKenna, Becca Mandy and Leah Adams also scored for Sandwich in the shootout while keeper Maggie LeVangie saved one shot and another went wide.

McKenna scored on a cross from Steph Briggs nine minutes into the match as the Blue Knights took a 1-0 lead into the half. The Wolverines evened the contest midway through the second half. Mandy sent a pair of corners into the box in the first overtime and hit the crossbar in the second but the teams would go to PKs to decide matters.

"They were a mirror-image of us," said DeConto. "It felt more like a semifinal game. They had good technique and were a physical team and just before the end of regulation their coach said to me what a great team we had."

Sandwich sophomore Liz Wegman highlighted what was an excellent defensive effort by the Blue Knights.

EAST SANDWICH — Sandwich received the game's lone tally from Jess Lizotte in the 77th minute to lift it to a close 1-0 non-league victory over Barnstable.

Girls soccer: Sandwich blanks Nauset

NORTH EASTHAM — Becca Mandy provided all the offense for Sandwich, scoring both goals in a a 2-0 Atlantic Coast League win against Nauset on Thursday.

Mandy's first came with less than a minute remaining in the first half, where she turned and fired a lofting ball over the keeper that kissed the cross bar on the way to the first Sandwich score.

Mandy netted her second with eights minutes to play in the game when she directed a ball off a corner kick for the score.

The Blue Knights earned their fifth shutout in seven games, in part because of the play of junior Rachael Lake and sophomore Liz Wegman. Lake was stingy on defense and Wegman provided the team with excellent minutes off the bench.
